Beating the recession. You have the tools, use them.

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Recently there has been a lot of talk about companies downsizing, laying off employees, and even shutting down. This can obviously take a HUGE toll on the economy and even lifestyles across the country. Luckily being a web development freelancer you will have ALL the tools to keep yourself going, and brining in some income, even if it is minimal, because anything helps.

Plenty of ways exist to market yourself to potential clients, taking time out of your day to place some cold calls, or make some walk-ins are great ways to spark some interests into some businesses, but without the proper tools, you might flop, as others are always thinking of better ways to sell themselves and gain business and revenue. Here is a little list of things that can help you gain clients during this hard time.

  • Business cards. (yes, this was a must in the past, but if you leave home without them, you will find yourself searching your pockets for sure)
  • Dress for the job. Don’t go to a client meeting wearing the shirt you spilt last nights spaghetti dinner on, and hair greasier than momma’s meatloaf.
  • Keep clean shaven… Only Willie Nelson can pull off that amount of scruff and get a positive reaction…
  • Prepare yourself for ANY questions that the potential client might have. Example: Why should they buy a website? Because with the economy the way it is today, web advertisement and presence is the most affordable way to make the public aware of your company. (good one, I know).
  • Remember, try to relate to the client, don’t get personal, but try to see their point of view.
  • Finally, If it comes down to letting the potential client have a day or two to think, follow up within 48 hours. The potential client will see this as you being reliable, and eager to serve them, you want to give them the impression that you are reliable and always around to give them what they need…

These things are sure to help, but make sure to smile, and put your own personality into your sales tactics. Be confident, and well prepared. There is nothing worse than being in a meeting and having the sales person fiddling and being nervous or shy. You need to sell your freelancing as reliable and strong… Its almost over, keep your head up and keep working.
